Club intro for new and potential members 2010
Welcome to the Vikings, Canberra’s friendliest cycling club!
The Vikings aim to be a club that caters for and supports competitive road cyclists of all levels. While we love to see our members being successful in races, we put more value on participation, enthusiasm and contribution. We now have members from all over the ACT, not just the south, and over the border in Queanbeyan and even Cooma. Rides, races and other events are held across the region.
Please feel free to sign up to the VCC newsletter – the V-mail– which comes out every one or two weeks. The newsletter includes race info and reports, safety tips, upcoming events, bunch ride info and any other news that may be of interest to club members.
The last couple of years have been good for the club. Our membership has grown to almost 200 riders, and we now have many juniors and masters (including the VCC/ACT Vets Masters team) among our ranks, both men and women.
Over the past three years we have run the 8-week VCC Novice Programs and followed this with weekly criterium skills sessions during the summer. We have over 60 riders in our Valhalla and V-Mobile teams participating in the summer criterium races on Wednesday nights with another 10+ participating in the VCC run Women’s C Grade crits on Thursday nights. Thursday night this summer also welcomes the new VCC hosted SuperCrit Thursday which caters for 45-60 minutes of full distance racing action from some of the ACT and surrounding districts’ best cyclists.
On the more seriously competitive scene we have also fared well. In January we had Michael Matthews, in the Under 23 age group in the Australian Open Road Championships coming 3rd in the Time Trial (28k) and 2nd in the Road Race (122.4k). Michael also recently won the Junior Cyclist of the year at the Australian Cycling Awards. Michael Milton and 2007 world champion Jane Armstrong are both adorned with several national paracycling medals each. The pair qualified for the Beijing Paralympic Games with Jane finishing fourth in the 500m final, narrowly missing a medal in her pet event.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the committee with any questions, problems or even ideas for the club. Any help you can offer, such as race marshalling, is always appreciated. The 2009 committee can be viewed here.
We look forward to seeing out there in 2010.
Best wishes,
The 2010 VCC Committee.
