2019 Club Awards

December 23, 2019

Congratulations to everyone on another great year for Vikings Cycling Club in 2019. Each year we present awards to members who have done great things with their cycling or for the Club as a whole. TLDR Full List

Lily Stratford hard at work at the ACTAS gym

Junior Cyclists of the Year:

For consistently giving their best and representing the Club in the best way possible

Lily Stratford

Lily has represented the club at both Track and Road Nationals in addition to numerous events across the country. She works hard to support the younger Juniors and wears the VCC kit with pride.

Domenic Kennedy

Dom has represented the club at Track Nationals as well as other events throughout the year. He has also started racing at Supercrits, with great success. Dom is committed to cycling and has encouraged his younger brothers to join the club and pursue track cycling.

Male Junior of the Year – Domenic Kennedy

Novices of the Year:

For the novice program graduates from the last 12 months who have show great dedication and improvement

Karen Clutson

Honourable mentions must go to Jo Rohan and Sarah Stephens who formed a formidable duo when working together in a bunch. Both demonstrated their commitment to the cause with regular appearances and strong performances at early morning spring sessions. Charlotte Hempenstall also proved herself a worthy contender, even squeezing in half-a-Norman when early morning work commitments proved unmovable. We’ll be here to help you keep riding and develop next year. So now it gives me great pleasure in announcing this years Female Novice of the Year. She’s proven herself to be a reliable wheel, a committed Viking and far and away asked all the right questions throughout this years Spring Novice Program. We hope she takes her next step into racing soon because we’re backing her 100%. She is: Karen Clutson.

Male Novice of the Year – Sam Lavery

Sam Lavery

Honourable mentions must go to Col Young who’s proven himself a committed Vikings this year. A solid Autumn Novice program set him up for the big year that he’s had. If you haven’t seen him at a bunch ride this year, you haven’t been riding this year! Patrick Lockwood also went through in Autumn and was really spreading his wings before an unlucky prang put him out of action. The promise and potential is there, and we’ve no doubt it will blossom in 2020. The Spring program brought new contenders in Tom Boyce, Matt Kendall and Conrad Lee who all came along in leaps and bounds. There’s three good men you want in your Viking longboat. So who is the Male Novice of the Year? He soaked up the Spring novice program like a sponge before launching himself into the racing scene. His enthusiasm was an inspiration to the class and coaches alike, and we’re looking forward to what he can accomplish in 2020, as I’m sure he is. I give you: Sam Lavery.

Most Improved

Riders who have trained hard all year, participated in club racing, training and bunch rides and reaped the rewards for their efforts by demonstrating great gains over the past 12 months

Chris Oborn

Chris has shown consistent improvement throughout the year culminating in an overall GC win at the Tour of Bright in Masters C Grade. He was also the Novice of the year in 2018!

Honourable mentions to: Sam Coleman and Kieran McCormack

Hard Nut Award

For someone who goes over and above with their riding. The sort of person that makes you go ‘wow, you did that?’

Andrew ‘Fozzy’ Steele

Fozzy had a bit of a bit October starting with the 300km Around the Bay followed by 175km Bowral Classic, 210km Fitz’s Challenge and finishing with the 100km Sydney to the Gong. He looked like a zombie for most of November.

Honourable mention to Conan Liu for crashing at Supercrits on a Thursday night then riding the Norman on the Friday morning not knowing that he had a punctured lung!

Best Wheel

For the best wheel to follow in a race – if you can get on it

Cal Henshaw

Consistent, Smooth, Dependable, and also bloody quick!

Meritorious Service

For someone who has shown dedication to the club over a long period of time

Matt Dyne

Matt’s efforts as Race Secretary in 2019 have gone consistently above and beyond and the Club is incredibly grateful for the effort that Matt has put in.

Rob Fisher

Our retiring President has been on the Committee for the past 7 years and has been President for 4 out of those 7. Rob’s ‘No BS’ attitude has served the Club well over that time and we are indebted to him for all he has done for the Club.

Club Member of the Year

For the greatest contributions to the club by general members over the past 12 months – volunteering, racing, training, contributing to club life

Sam Cunninghame

No surprises here. Sam is involved everywhere in the Club. Racing, Coaching, Development Programs, Organising the Novice Program, Assisting with the Norman, Organising Racing trips away, he’s simply a huge asset to the Club.
