Vikings Training Programs – July to December 2013

July 8, 2013

VCC is pleased to announce that Club Coach Simon Dwyer will be organising training programs available to all members again in the second half of 2013. The club program has been running for 12 months now, with great success. With experience coaching riders across all levels of ability and talent, coach Simon Dwyer has successfully managed to build a strong rider base in all grades within the club as VCC members make their mark at club, state and national level. The success of Simon’s training program has increased the club member base as occasional riders from all over Canberra make the step from the increasingly popular novice program and transition to road racing. The various program streams cater for riders from E grade up to A grade. All members of CA registered clubs are invited to participate in the programs.

The cost is $120 for the six months from mid-July to the Christmas break. Sign up here:https://eventdesq.imgstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&EventDesqID=3393&OrgID=8529

About the program and who it’s for

The club program will be divided into two streams: Race and Development. These programs will cover pretty much the whole of the regular VCC club level racers, from those just graduated from a novice program right up to those looking to hit up A and B grade road races. The program is road focused, but riders are encouraged to dabble in other cycling disciplines such as mountain bike or track.

**This training program is different from the Novice Program. The Novice Program is an eight week program that starts in late September and is focused on skills for people who want to start bike racing. The Vikings Training Program is the next step for riders wanting to continue to develop fitness, skills and tactics.

Masters riders (30+)

This year the NSW and National Masters Championships will be held down the road in Goulburn in September and October respectively. There will be a lot of members hoping to do well at these events and as such the race group will have a masters stream peaking in October.

How it works

Both programs include an emailed training guide tailored to the target events, along with a number of coached sessions to develop skills and tactics. The programs will be easy to follow, free of jargon and importantly enjoyable. In addition to major targets we’ll have some intermediate targets to get ourselves tuned up, and of course plenty of local club racing.

Training groups & Targets

The groups are not set in concrete – if you start in one you can move to another and of course there’ll be fluidity in groups on the road depending on fitness. Some training sessions will be separate, but many will be all together.

  • Development: The Development program will target the Tour of Two Rivers scratch race series and the summer criteriums. The program is aimed at improving bike skills, tactics and fitness and progressing towards C grade standard. Riders should have completed the novice program or at least have a basic level of racing skills. Expect about 8-10 hours a week as the (average) suggested volume.
  • Race (including masters): The race group will be targeting the Tour of the Goldfields or the Australian Masters Championships in late October, then moving into criterium mode for December. This group is race focused, for riders intending to race men’s A/B/C or women’s A/B grade on the road. Expect about 12 hours a week as the (average) suggested volume.

To participate in this program you must have a current Cycling Australia licence to ensure the necessary insurance cover.
