Vikings juniors making their mark on the track

February 25, 2015

Nine of the Vikings Junior Squad entered the 2015 ACT Track Championships and rode with considerable distinction throughout the two day event.  It is worth noting that seven of our riders were competing in their first open track carnival.  From a coaches perspective, both Michael Aisbitt and I were impressed by the courage and tenacity shown, particularly when our riders were pitted against very experienced riders.  We also recognised the way EVERY one of our riders rode thoughtfully and implemented the training drills and skills we had worked on in our Monday and Saturday sessions.

From the youngest:

Jesse Dunlop rode consistently throughout the six events, battling his bike and the experienced opposition, posting a particularly impressive time in the Time Trial.

Lauren Robards rode strongly in all events, highlighting the valuable experience she has gained from riding the National Junior Track Series.

Zoe Cuthbert made an impressive start, second fastest in Flying 200 as well as an impressive time in the Time Trial. Unfortunately, she was unable to complete Day 2.

Dylan Weir demonstrated the value of commitment and hard work with fast times in the Time Trial and Flying 200 as well as strong performances in bunch events.

Alex Hansen had a smile on her face every time I looked at her.  Although battling experienced riders, she demonstrated tenacious riding throughout.

Lauren Thomas approached each ride with a determination to test her limits, and she improved with each race.  Intelligent riding with Alex saw them achieve new heights.

Jack Dunlop had the toughest age division, pitted against four of ACT’s most experienced juniors.  Jack’s positive attitude and drive to improve saw him push new horizons.

Trent Morgan rode in Jack’s division, also against formidable opposition.  His courage to complete each event was admired far and wide.

Wilson Howden had his first experience of track racing, also pitted against a very experienced rider.  Perhaps his most impressive ride was in the Time Trial, where he had to ride a longer distance than the other divisions.  This provided a steep learning curve for him, but he rose to the occasion with a well controlled ride.

Tristan Yip (a CCC rider who has been training with the group) showed his progressive development with solid performances all round.  Particularly impressive is his ability to apply sound tactics with split-second decisions.

Congratulations to all our riders.  Bec, Simon, Michael and I are very proud of your sporting dignity, fair play and enthusiasm to develop as riders.  Special thanks to our parent helpers.  Your generous willingness to assist in many roles helps us become stronger and move upwards along the cycling pathway.
