Women in road cycling – an introduction

October 2, 2013

This discussion session is being run for the female novices, but there is plenty of room so other women should feel welcome to come along if interested. It is a semi-structured session – there are slides and talking points but it runs best if everyone contributes their experiences and asks questions. The more questions the better!

The aim of this session is to discuss road cycling from the perspective of a female starting out – issues, opportunities, barriers and pathways. We run this session for three reasons: so that your entry into the sport is as smooth as possible; so you can learn from the experiences of other women; and so there are fewer surprises along the way.

This discussion is facilitated by coach Bec Doolan, based on notes from Siân Mulholland. Regular club rider and member of the Boss Racing Team, Tegan Elferkh, will also be there to share her experiences and opinions. As mentioned it is a semi-structured session. The more discussion and questions the better.

This session is for women only, so husbands/partners/dads will have to sit it out at the bar.

The discussion will cover topics such as:

-Pathways for women in cycling
-Equipment choice – bike size, saddle, knicks (chamois, bibs vs shorts), do you need women’s specific?
-Barriers to women
-Differences, or not, between women and men in cycling
-Training basics
